When describing single implants, there are generally 3 pieces or parts to the commonly described implant:
The Implant Fixture is the man-made root that is placed into the bone to replace the root of the tooth.
The Implant Abutment is generally described as the part that connects the actual crown (or tooth that you chew with) to the implant fixture. There are many types of abutments depending on the placement of the fixture, the anatomy of the patient, and the type of restoration planned for attachment to the fixture. Sometimes when there are multiple implants placed, multi-unit abutments will be attached to the implant fixture to allow a better path of draw and insertion of the final prosthesis as well as distribute and dissipate biting forces from a physics or engineering perspective.
The Implant Crown is generally described as the part that you actually see in the mouth as you chew and smile.
A fixed bridge can be attached to two or more implant fixtures that are placed in the jaw bone. The connection of the appliance to implants is screw-retained - only your dentist can remove it. And no need to worry about your teeth falling out unexpectedly - because they are screwed in. This lessens the thickness of extra material like that of a traditional denture covering the roof of the mouth or "flange" areas that extend along the gum tissue for retention of the appliance. An implant bridge can be a horse-shoe-designed shape allowing more access of your tongue to your natural anatomy. Cleaning and maintenance of these appliances are very important for longevity. Waterpiks can be very helpful in assisting with cleaning under bridges.
Depending on your anatomy, some implant fixtures can be placed and restored on the same day. The day you have your teeth extracted, we have options for you to leave our office with a fixed appliance so you won't have to deal with a removable denture at any time. Not everyone is a candidate, so it is important to schedule a consultation to determine if you can receive our same-day dental implants in Allentown, PA.
A lot of planning and behind-the-scenes work goes into preparing for all of our implant or fixed prosthetic cases.
